Have Your Print & Hear It Too--Almost

Finally low vision readers can have their print and hear it too--almost. There are two software platforms available for seeing ebook print and hearing Digital Accessible Information Systems (DAISY) books read. One is an app (application program) from Levelware called InDAISY Reader, for Apple Computer’s iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch products: http://levelware.com/. The other is for PC Computer users by Dolphin Company, a software program called EasyReader. It will read DAISY, other audio formats as well as some text formats: http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog?y=9&x=19&search=ebook+player. Enable Mart has a list of available players: http://www.enablemart.com/Catalog/Talking-Books
The closest player for DAISY, other audio and some print file formats is the Sony DX which is on the EnableMart list above. It will also play iTunes music files.
There is a page in Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia covering the DAISY format along with players and software informational links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DAISY_Digital_Talking_Book.
Ebook reading devices that enable text-to-speech capability include the Apple iPad 16G, Amazon’s Kindle 3G, Kindle DX and Kindle WiFi. These do not have touch screens. They are listed here: http://ebook-reader.pikimal.com/top/for/audiobook-lovers. These will play MP3 audio files but not DAISY format.
